Learning the Chinese Language

Expert Stuff

This language is considered by many as one of the hardest to learn. In fact, if your goal is to become a Chinese Language Expert, then it may as well be!
If this is your goal, I would recommend, right now, that you start with a university (or college) in your area which has a comprehensive Chinese Learning Program and continue learning
with a few years of intense study in Beijing, China (BLCU and Peking University are respected universities in Beijing). I want to make it clear that I will not teach reading or writing (although I may decide to offer such courses later down the track).
If, however, you are looking to speak the most widely spoken language in the world, quick, easy & effortlessly, then you've come to the right place!

Anyone can Learn to Speak Chinese!

Many people have given up on trying to learn Chinese because, unless you're already familiar with pronouncing Chinese words, then you'll most likely find it difficult to dive right into any Mandarin course or audio CDs which tend to go through words quite quickly. Add to that the fact that you have to memorize words which appear to bear no resemblance to its English counterpart & you begin to understand why so many people give up on learning Chinese!
This is very unfortunate because I think the ability to speak Chinese is very enriching & enables you to connect to a far greater number of people (not to mention impressing them as well).

This is why I'm very excited to have you here. I get the opportunity to show you that Chinese need not be a difficult language to learn -- that it can indeed be a fun & exciting process!
The fact that you're here tells me that you want to learn Chinese for one reason or another. Perhaps it's for your personal interest, maybe business, travel or to communicate with a Chinese friend! Whatever the case is, I'm glad that you're here and I want to help you get started as soon as possible and have you speaking Chinese in no time!
I'll assume that you have absolutely no knowledge of the Chinese Language. I'll walk you through all the basics of Chinese & make it as easy as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Mandarin & Chinese?

Technically, Chinese refers to the family of languages spoken in China. We use it, however, to loosely refer to Mandarin Chinese (China's official language); I have seen people use the term to refer to Standard Cantonese (a dialect spoken by approximately 70 million as oppose to 850 million Mandarin speakers).

Is it right for me?

Hopefully I've made it clear from the start that I will not teach you how to read or write. Rather, I intend to teach you how to speak conversational Chinese. Most the people that have shown interest are business people (who don't have a lot of time & need something quick & easy); people that have travelled or will be travelling to China soon; people that have Chinese friends & want to be able to speak to them in Chinese; & generally people that have an interest in Chinese culture.

Will you talk much about Business Etiquette/Chinese Culture?

I get quite a lot of emails on this. The answer is no. The focus of the audio product is to ensure you learn how to speak conversational Chinese. I am aware of books, however, that discuss this area in some detail if you're interested. If you are going to negotiate with people in China, I would very much encourage you do your homework here because there are stark cultural differences between the western world and China.

Will learning Chinese help my career?

I've received various forms of this question by email. The answer: it depends. Putting "basic Chinese" as a skill on your resume won't land you that dream job you couldn't have gotten otherwise. That said, China is all about "guanxi" - that is, the relationships. Having some basic Chinese speaking skills, especially as a foreigner, can get you some real brownie points.
