The first software tool I recommend to all of my intermediate to advanced Chinese language students is "Dim Sum". You can download a *free* copy here. Simply paste the Chinese text (as a word, sentence or essay!) into the software, hover your mouse over the word & its translation comes up. Note that you need Java to run it.
