The Chinese Zodiac is based upon a 12-year cycle, each year represented by one of 12 animals. The Chinese Zodiac was originally created to count the years and to keep track of one’s age (a practice which has survived the millennia and is still used today! Instead of asking, “How old are you?” Chinese people will ask, “What Zodiac Sign Are You?”). The selection and order of the animals used actually originated during the Han Dynasty (206 – 220) and was based upon each animal’s characteristics and living habits. There are some origin stories which you can read about here. The Chinese people believed (and still do!) that when a baby is born, his or her animal sign is said to reveal their character.

First is the sign of the Rat. Those born under the Rat are clever, sharp, quick-witted and funny. They tend to be especially good friends and possess great loyalty and generosity to those they consider allies. They might be greedy, but are always up for a challenge, and are always brimming with curiosity. Rats match with Dragons and Monkeys.
The Ox is known for being a leader of his group, but insecure and possibly lonely in private. Goal-oriented and steadfast, he may appear overly serious, but that is because he is constantly striving to get the job done. He will stick with few close friends and family and is always great to have on your side. Oxen match with Snakes and Roosters.
If Oxen are the strong, steadfast, quiet leaders, Tigers are the charming, ambitious, but authoritative ones. Always looking for the next big kill, they are ambitious, ever courageous, and can be extremely seductive if the need arises. They tend to be moody and intense, which can be a drain for those around them. Tigers match with Horses and Dogs.
Rabbits are friendly and extremely sociable, always looking to be around their friends and family. They make great listeners due to their compassion and sincerity. They are popular in groups, but sometimes considered pushovers, as they try and avoid conflict. Rabbits match with Goats and Pigs.
One of the noblest animals, those born under the Dragon are charismatic and always skilled in matters of the heart, though this may lead to them being a bit egotistic. Warm-hearted, but likes to give orders and is willing to do what is necessary to stay in a position to do so. Dragons match with Monkeys and Rats.
Snakes are mysterious, sometimes your best friend and sometimes your worst enemy. They tend to be introverted and intelligent, keeping only a small circle of contacts, but they are generous and charming to those they let in. Snakes are hard-working once they begin a job, and good with money once they finish it. Snakes match with Rooster or Ox.
Being born under the Horse tends to make one energetic and independent, though they also love to love and intimacy is among their favorite things. They can’t stand being held in one place and travel is always on their mind. Can be seen as impatient and uncaring, but really they just want to move on. Horses match with Dogs and Tigers.
Goats are the most solitary of the Zodiac animals. Creative thinkers and hopelessly unorganized, they rarely share their works as they are innately insecure and anxious. Getting on a Goat’s good side can take a lot of time, love, and reassurance. Goats match with Pigs and Rabbits.
The hedonistic Monkey just wants to have fun. Brimming with energy and in a perpetual good mood, they can’t stand being inactive. Good listeners, but when push comes to shove will focus on themselves before others. Tend to be poor at long-term relationships, to the frustration of their partners. Monkeys match with Rats and Dragons.
The analytical Rooster is the most conservative of the Zodiac animals. Ever practical, observant and resourceful, they think through their problems so they do them right the first time. They are perfectionists and sometimes neat-freaks. Roosters match with Oxen or Snakes.
Dogs are loyal and faithful to their friends, and distrustful of anyone outside their group. They also tend to be flighty and sensitive, and their mood can change at the drop of a hat. Usually has trouble finding a life partner. Dogs match well with Tigers and Horses.
The final Zodiac animal is one of the most pleasant. Pigs are good-mannered and always kind. They have exceptional taste themselves, but never come off as superior about it. They are intelligent, always looking for new information. They enjoy helping others and making friends, but will never forget if you betray them. Pigs match with Rabbits and Goats.
